New South Wales

I have never been anyplace more ecologically or geographically diverse than New South Wales.  Rain forests, deserts, grasslands, mountains, deep canyons, waterfalls, dramatic rocky coasts, and endless beaches...  Most of the territory is rural and sparsely populated but it's capital, Sydney, is the largest city in Australia and one of the most up-scale cities on the planet.

Locations

Avisford Nature Reserve

The three sections of the Avisford Nature Reserve are located on the southwest side of Mudgee.  The proximity to town, ease of the trails, and abundant natural and historic features make this is a good destination for walkers of every ability and experience level.

Columbey National Park

A variety of diverse young-growth eco-zones is the reason this 2,145 acres was set aside as a national park.

Ferntree Gully Reserve

This reserve near Rylstone features a nature walk through a deeply-shaded gully with vertical sandstone walls.  It's a perfect escape from the heat on hot and humid days.

Freres Crossing Reserve

Freres Crossing Reserve is part of the George's River Bushlands.  Easily accessible and only 8km from Campbelltown, the reserve features the ruins of a historic bridge, natural bushland, and a 1.8 km return walk.

Keith Longhurst Reserve

Keith Longhurst Reserve is located only minutes from Campbelltown and features the George's River, waterfall, natural pool, and bush land.

Meroo National Park

Meroo National Park, located on the southern coast of NSW, is a great place to find solitude and surf on small isolated beaches.

Mount Royal National Park

Mount Royal National Park is located near Singleton.  It's a remote and undeveloped park suitable for exploration by experienced bush walkers.

Mt. York Reserve

Recovering from a devastating bush fire in 2013, Mt. York is the point at which the first road over the Blue Mountains was completed.  The park's overlooks offer peaceful views of the valley below, and the walking tracks offer a bit of solitude only minutes from Mt. Victoria.

Murramarang National Park

This 30,000 acre park of coastal woodland, beaches, and rocky coast is located just north of Bateman's Bay.

The Drip Natural Area

Located in the Mudgee region near the town of Ulan, The Drip is a privately-owned natural area featuring the Goulburn River and a short walking track to an overhanging bluff.

Wollongong Botanic Garden

Peaceful and educational, this is an outstanding city park on the edge of a small bustling city.

Clarence Town

Clarence Town is a small community in rural New South Wales, north of Newcastle.

Lithgow

Lithgow is a traditional Australian industrial town on the west side of the Blue Mountains.  With a variety of historic sites and close proximity to vast national parks, it's worthy of an extended visit.

Mudgee

Mudgee is a mid-size town in the interior of New South Wales.  A town of vines, wines, and mines, Mudgee has found a unique and hopefully sustainable balance between modern mining, traditional agriculture, and trendy tourism.

Singleton

Singleton is a historic town located among the coal mines and wineries of the famous Hunter Valley.  The town's highlights include the flying foxes, historic architecture, and the Hunter River.

Ulladulla

Ulladulla is a small town on the rocky southern coast of New South Wales.  The town is known for whale-watching, ocean fishing, surfing, and the many national parks in the area.

Random Photos of New South Wales

Many people in the States ask if I've seen the Sydney Opera House. So here's an expected photo.

How to take an interesting or original photograph the most over-photographed building on the continent? I wish I knew.

New South Wales grassland pasture. Much of N.S.W. looks similar.

    • Thank you for all of the nice comments. The cost of creating and posting a small personal website like this is very low so there is no need for advertising. I have much more to add, many places that I’ve already photographed and hopefully many more places that I’ll photograph in the future. Stop by again soon. 🙂
